Provenance:Estate of the artist; Collection of the artist's sister, Toronto Exhibited:Exhibited at 20 Rue de France, Nice, France inscribed to label verso, n.d., Note:Although the artist was born in Buenos Aires, as the daughter of British diplomats, she spent her childhood years in Argentina and was sent to London (circa 1928) to study at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and at the City and Guilds School of Art. and completed her education at the Watford School of Art. She studied under two of Britain's finest portrait artists: Augustus John and Arthur Ralph Todd. Janes began her career as an illustrator and commercial artist in the 1930's. In addition to illustrating children's books, she commissioned to work for the Disney Studios in London. She created textile designs and watercolours in the Art Deco style and also painted flower studies, a favourite subject of hers. Her works were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy (from 1948), the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Pastel Society and the Paris Salon. She was a full member of the Federation of British Artists, the United Society of Artists and the Societe Francais, Paris. After WWII, Janes turned almost exclusively to portrait and figure painting, several of which are being offered in this sale.
