Description

Two draped figures, one gesturing to the right pen and brown ink 140 x 83 mm. PROVENANCE Sir Peter Lely (L. 2092). Heneage Finch, 5th Earl of Aylesford (L. 58). Holtkott, their mark (not in Lugt). NOTES Other drawings by Tamagni are illustrated in A.E. Popham, 'Some drawings by Vincenzo Tamagni', Old Master Drawings, September-March 1939, XIV, pls. 41-3 and in B. Berenson, The Drawings of the Florentine painters, Chicago, 1938, figs. 363-9. Another drawing close in handling to the present one is at Christ Church, Oxford, J. Byam Shaw, Drawings by Old Masters at Christ Church, Oxford, Oxford, 1976, no. 324, pl. 202. David Rust kindly confirmed the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
