This is a copy after the painting by Jan Both, executed circa 1645, and now in the Wallace Collection, London (inv. no. P28). Such watercolour copies of earlier paintings were very popular in the later 18th century, and frequently the artist inscribed on the verso, alongside his signature, a note of the collection in which the original was to be found. Indeed, although only the signature is currently visible on the present drawing, the extremities of a futher inscription above can be seen, suggesting that in this case too there is actually more information to be revealed.
