Berchtesgaden came under Bavarian rule in 1810 and was favoured by the royal family who visited Königsee and kept a royal hunting residence in the town itself. The town attracted visitors and artists began to work here, attracted by the trade -- their gathering point the 'Malereck' (painters' corner) on the edge of the lake.

Mount Watzmann at 2713m is the third highest mountain in Germany, famous among climbers for its Ostwand .

Biermann was a founder member of the Berliner Landschaftsmalerei . He began his career as a porcelain artist before concentrating on landscape painting in Bavaria, Switzerland, the Tirol and Italy.
