Notes

This is one of a group of drawings which have been recently attributed to Paulus van Hillegaert, on the basis of an old inscription which appears on the verso of one of the sheets from the group, in the Staatliche Museen, Berlin; Bock-Rosenberg, 1930, p. 152). Other drawings from the group are in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (Andrews, op. cit.), the Kunstmuseum, Bern (inv. A 3096), the de Grez collection in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, inv. 1584) and the Fodor Collection in Amsterdam (Tekeningen van Noord: en Zuidnederlands Kunstenaars, exhib. cat., Amsterdam Museum, 1979, no. 93, as anonymous). Further drawings from that group are listed in Christie's, Amsterdam, 14 November 1994, lot 118.
