Notes

Giner, a priest from Valencia, worked with Viviano Codazzi in Rome during the 1660s and the latter would remain the dominant influence on his architectural views throughout his career. We are grateful to Dr. David Ryley Marshall for pointing out that the present work was probably executed after Giner's return to Spain. Stylistically it may be compared with a pair of paintings formerly on the Roman art market; see D. R. Marshall, Viviano and Niccolò Codazzi, Rome 1993, pp. 512-513, cat. nos. VGI5 and VGI6, both reproduced.
