Description

VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph quotation signed ('G. Verdi') and dated (in English) June 1862, three bars in C major, from an unidentified work; together with musical quotations by Edouard Silas, George William Martin and Giovanni Davide, further signatures on verso, on one page, oblong 8vo, cut from a larger leaf, tipped onto card. Provenance: Sotheby's sale, 18 November 1988, lot 481.

Verdi's presence in England in 1862 was occasioned by the premier on 24 May of his Cantica (Inno delle Nazioni), which had been commissioned in connection with the Great Exhibition of 1862.
