Item Overview

Description

Verburgh, Cornelis Gerrit
Rotterdam 1802 - 1879

Ice Skaters on a Frozen River, most likely near Rotterdam. Signed lower right: C G Verburgh. Oil on canvas. Laid on beaverboard. 65 x 76cm. Carved, gilded original frame (?).

Similar to his contemporaries Charles Leickert or even earlier Andreas Schelfhout, Cornelis Verburgh specialised on expansive Dutch landscape depictions. They are often considered to be very narrative due to their lively and social nature of figures in larger gatherings.
A perfect example of this is the present work of a winter landscape by the harbour with a silhouette of a city in the background, most likely his birth place Rotterdam. Ice skaters, children and figures taking a stroll are depicted gathering before a typical "Koek-en-zopie". This small improvised stand included in the winter landscape dates back to the 1700's and is often a repeated pictorial element.
