Description

Attributed to Giovanni Battista Zelotti (Verona 1526-1578 Mantua)
Venus begging Adonis not to go hunting
with inscription 'Paolo'
pen and brown ink, brown wash
8 5/8 x 12 1/8 in. (220 x 307 mm.)

Literature

W. Mayor, A brief Chronological Description of a collection of Original Drawings and Sketches by the Old Masters... formed by the late Mr. William Mayor, London, 1871 and 1875, p. 51, no. 226 (as Tiziano Vecellio).

Provenance

Earl Spencer (L. 1530).
W. Mayor (L. 2799), possibly his mount.

Notes

Inspired by Veronese's picture of Venus and Adonis in the Augsburg Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, this drawing is possibly a study for Zelotti's picture of the same subject now in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie. An attribution to Carletto Caliari (1570-1596) has also been suggested.
