CATALOGUE NOTE

The second edition, augmented with eighty-seven more subjects than the first edition of 1590. The costume subjects were designed by Vecellio and cut by Christoph Krieger (otherwise known as Cristoforo Guerra). Vecellio was a cousin of the artist Titian, studied with him, and it is thought was assisted by him in the design of the illustrations. Many of the subjects appear to be based on manuscript or printed sources, for example those of Nicolas de Nicolay and Pieter de Coeck. The book was owned by the English historical painter Benjamin R. Haydon (1786-1846). Haydon is chiefly known for his larger-than-life genre scenes such as Christ's Entry into Jerusalem in which he painted the portraits of his poet friends Keats, Wordsworth, Lamb and the Hunt brothers.
