Item Overview

Description

This hand-colored lithograph is from Leon Louis Vaillant's Mission Scientifique au Mexique et dans l'Amerique Centrale. The work was published in Paris by Imprimerie Nationale in 1874. The work illustrated many new and uncommon species of Central America and the Caribbean. The plates were completed by Bocourt and lithographed by Mesnel.

Leon Louis Vaillant was a noted French ichthyologist and herpetologist. He was a professor of reptiles and fishes at the Paris Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle and "inherited responsibility for the then-largest collections of reptiles and fishes in the world" (Adler). Marie Firmin Bocourt combined zoological knowledge with great artistic qualities, and initiated this work.
