Notes

Auguste Vacquerie was a poet, playwright, art critic, and collector who belonged to Hugo's intimite circle of friends. He joined Hugo's family while exiled from France and learned the art and craft of photography from Charles, Hugo's son, while in their company. The majority of the work the two men made together was collected in family albums. This image is from one such album.
