In 1945 McCannell married the artist Peter Rees Roberts and they went on a holiday together in Mousehole, Cornwall. In 1945, McCannell and Rees Roberts painted the fishermen and sailors in Cornwall. In 1945, Rees Roberts painted his important self-portrait The Painter in Mousehole.
The present work appears to be a strong example of this period.
