Notes

This rare set of works was a collaboration between five art world figures in the late 1950s. Possibly the most well-known internationally is Kawara On, whose most famous work, Today Series (1966-2014) is an accumulation of thousands of "Date Paintings" executed over almost 50 years. Quiet meditations on the fundamental nature of time and the personal nature of history, each was executed in just one day, on the date shown. Segi Shinichi was a well-known art critic, commentator and head of the Tokyo Art Institute. Tatehata Kakuzo was the eldest son of the sculptor Tatehata Taimu (1880-1942) and studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He was influenced by the work of the British sculptor Henry Moore and in 2005 was honoured as a person of Cultural Merit. Mitsui Eiichi and Higashi Shunji were both artists.
