Notes

Uldis Zemzaris is a well known Latvian painter who has worked and exhibited his works in numerous personal exhibitions in Riga, Moscow (1974), Sydney (1982), Ottawa (1984), Columbus (USA, 1990), New York, Boston (1991). His works can be found in museums and private collections worldwide. In the first decade after the World War 2 with the use of deportations, nationalisation and arrests the occupying regime strengthened its grip on the artistic expression, thus introducing the socialist realism. After the death of Stalin and the 20th Congress of the Communist Party (CPSU) the social and artistic life in Latvia experienced what is known as “thaw”. Soviet Republics were offered a false hope of self-determination and partial independence, as well as introduction of national elements in the arts. People experienced their first exposure to the “depraved” art of Western Europe - the 6th International Student Arts Festival was a memorable and surprising event for the audience, including the young artist Uldis Zemzaris (1928) who had just graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia, Painting department in 1955. The sense of freedom that coincided with the thaw of Chruschtschow regime was a breath of fresh air for the young generation of artists and helped them to find a new source of creative energy and to generate new ideas. While on his way back home, looking through the airplane window and observing cloud formations, Uldis Zemzaris found inspiration for his first attempt at abstract painting “Flight” (1957). It was clear that exhibiting works of this nature would not be possible, but they served as thought experiments and liberation from the restrictions of the Soviet regime. For exhibition purposes the artist painted expressive portraits, landscapes, marinas, however on trips and workshops he was able to create works freely expressing his emotions and impressions. Works of Uldis Zemzaris illustrated the ambivalence of Soviet regime proving that the “Soviet life” and real life are not the same.
