Chiaroscuro woodcut, printed from four blocks in shades of brown and black, after Raphael, second state (of three), before the inscription on the steps was erased, on paper with a Three Mounts with Cross watermark, with margins, borderline retouched in places, a central vertical printer's crease, slight foxing

This chiaroscuro woodcut reproduces one of Raphael's tapestry cartoons commissioned in 1515 by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel depicting scenes from the lives of the Apostles. The cartoons are in the Queen's collection, on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
