Notes

By the middle of the nineteenth century, a major effort was underway to both acquire and restore Washington's home, Mount Vernon. In 1858, Miss Ann Pamela Cunningham founded The Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, an organization that raised the money and completed the restoration work; it continues to maintain the estate to this day. Both of these scenes were produced during the early years of the restoration. See Robert Harley, "George Washington Lived Here: Some Early Prints of Mount Vernon, Part II" The Magazine Antiques, (March, 1945), pp. 167.
