Description

born St. Andrews, Scotland 1847-1932, and Liverpool, England, 19th century First club: a wood with a scared neck stamped "Mackrel" Second club: a smooth-faced iron that is faintly stamped Both fitted with a Morris & Shaw patent "Champion" grip, which resembles animal horn or bone Both grips in overall very good condition, the example fitted to the wood with a clearer original stamp.

Notes

While a pro at Hoylake, Morris and Shaw developed the idea of a molded rubber grip designed to better fit the golfers hands and help the golfer grip the club correctly. The result was the "Champion" grip. For more information about and to see another John Morris club, please see lot 17.
