Justo da Gandarias was a Spanish sculptor who trained in Barcelona and in Paris, where he often exhibited at the Salon, starting in 1875. He received a silver medal at the Exposiciones Nacionales in Madrid in 1887 for his El amor y el interés. In 1900 he left Europe to become director of the Escuela de Belles Artes in Guatemala. There he taught some of the leading Guatemalan artists of the 20th Century.
