Lot 177: TRAVEL POSTER TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT UNITED STATES TO FRANCE GEORGES VILLA

Original vintage travel poster published to promote the Transatlantic Air line between the United States and France featuring a three panels colour painting by notable French cartoonist and caricaturist Georges Villa (1883-1965). The first panel shows a horse coach going up an uphill road with its passengers walking behind it, while the second panel depicts cars crossing on a dirt road. The third panel shows aircrafts flying over the coast of France. The text in French reads “Dans un chemin montant, sablonneux, malaise. Et de tous les cotés au soleil exposé, six forts chevaux tiraient un coche. Arrivée au Havre du Transatlantique Aérien “Etats-Unis.” Translation in English reads “On an uphill road, sandy and difficult, and exposed to the sun on all sides, six strong horses pull a coach. The good old days. The fleeting present. Arrival at Le Havre by Transatlantic Air, United States to France. The Glorious Future.” Edited by Ss. Secretariat de l’Aéronautique, Paris. Georges Marie Villa (Montmédy 1883 - Paris 1965) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. Cartoonist on favourite subjects such as aviation and fencing, and illustrator of books including works by Anatole France, Theophile Gautier and Edgar Allan Poe. He became known for his caricatures and portraits as well as his erotic drawings using charcoal and pastel. Very good condition, faint staining and repaired small tears in margins, backed on linen.
