TOTT, François de (1733-1793). Mémoires ... sur les Turcs et les Tartares. Amsterdam: 1785. 2 vols, 4° (249 x196mm), 16 aquatint plates, all but one folding. (Waterstaining in vol. I affecting engraved area of one plate, plate margins, and beginning and end quires, a few plates offset, a few quires browned, lacks half-titles.) Contemporary tree calf (extremities lightly rubbed, upper joints of vol. I lifting slightly). Provenance: Earl of Dalhousie (bookplate). FIRST QUARTO EDITION and the first of only two editions to be illustrated. Atabey 1228 (this copy; binding illustrated); Blackmer 1667; Weber II, 534.

(Light spotting and staining to a few plate margins, one plate with closed marginal tear, title lightly browned and spotted, some spotting of text, mainly marginal.) Contemporary half russia, original lithographed wrappers mounted on pastedowns (spine worn). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Atabey 511 (refers to this second copy); Blackmer 718; Carteret III, p. 594; Weber I 308 (second issue). With 3 other works by Volney, Wansleben and La Ferte-Meun (the last lacking frontispiece).
