Saito Yoshishige began this series before World War II, with each work in relief and made of oval and elongated-oval-shaped pieces of wood painted and carefully aligned, each touching the next in various formations. The Toro-Wood works he made before the war were either destroyed or lost and so he began recreating them and continued the series late into his life.
