TOM ROBERTSON, RBA (BRITISH, 1850-1947) ON THE LOIRE AT OUDON bears title on label attached to backboard oil on panel 8.5cm x 24cm; 7 1/4in x 9 1/2in Provenance: Private Collection; Sotheby's Olympia, 2004 Robertson was a landscape and marine artist, born in Glasgow in 1850. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in Paris under Benjamin Constant. On his return to Glasgow in the late 1880s he began to show in his studio and then in major London and provincial galleries. He exhibited 15 works at the Royal Academy and 77 with the Fine Art Society. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896 and to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1912. He lived in London from 1899 to 1935 and then retired to Eastbourne where he died in 1947 at the age of 97.
