Numismatists Tokens and Ephemera, DEVON, County series, William Upcott, Twopence, 1801, view of Eddystone lighthouse, rev. view of Spurn Point lighthouse, edge plain, flan of normal thickness, 34.87g/6h (D 21; Spink 51, 262, this piece). An attractive original striking without any die cracks and only the merest hint of a flaw on the Spurn lighthouse, extremely fine and very rare£500-£700---Provenance: SNC March 1910 (74285); W. Sykes Collection, Spink Auction 51, 16 April 1986, lot 262. Sold with original Spink paper envelope and Spink receipted invoice dated 10 March 1910, detailing the purchase of this piece and that in the following lot.Exhibition: Yorkshire Numismatic Society, Leeds, 7 December 1912.William Upcott (1779-1845), antiquary and librarian, was a keen collector of coins and tokens by the turn of the 19th century and lived in Islington, London. Upcott designed this token; it and the next lot have been retained under Devon, following published literature.
