Notes

"The materials used by Tim Silver are by today's standards not so much unusual but still somewhat unexpected. In post-industrial societies we have seen the decline of a hierarchy of materials (such as oils and marble) and an explosion of new materials at the artist's disposal. Art students in particular have found the widened range of materials useful for their cheapness and accessibility. These materials have also provided opportunities to experiment with the concrete properties of the materials in a way that results in innovative conceptual relations between the object and its substance...

Part of the fascination generated by Silver's work is the result of his use of popular products (such as fairy floss and chocolate) to produce objects that are understood through their iconic status in popular culture. In a sense these works are ultimate Pop, a case of where the resonances of the materials and the manufactured objects combine with such resolve and familiarity that our lives seem to have been assimilated by them. Aeroplanes, motorbikes, cars, a guitar and skateboards all reference quotidian activity and it is no surprise to find that Silver wants to make representations of objects that by their very nature 'participate in the world'. The objects we see imply conveyance or the act of moving from one place to another and in this they might also be seen as the transient metaphors of freedom. Each piece also reflects the ability of art itself to transport the audience from the space of everyday life into a dimension of imagination." (D Broker, Primavera 2002, Sydney 2002, p.32)
