Private Collection, Toronto Tom Hodgson's series of what he called participatory works was created during the 1970s. Unafraid of experimentation, Hodgson's idea was to invite the viewer or collector to become involved in manipulating the finished product. Several of these paintings were unstretched canvases. Payne's Grey consists of two layers of canvas fabric with the addition of metal grommets, wood slats, tacks and a clothespin to anchor or loosen elements of the surface. The artist is quoted as saying ""For me, process is more important than content.""
