Executed in the year the Thomases married.R.S. Thomas wrote numerous poems to his wife including Mass for Hard Times (1992) which are among the most intense and moving that he ever wrote. Another portrait of Thomas, dated 1941, by his wife is in the National Portrait Gallery.
