Deffet Francis (No. 1445) Christies sale, 3rd April 1962, Lot 72, sold for 50 gns John Deffett Francis (1815-1901), a well known art critic and painter, Swansea born and moved to London in the 1840's, he numbered among his friends Dickens, Ruskin, the Landseers, Mulready and Leech. His collection of works of art, which in time amounted to 2,000 items, mainly drawings and engravings, was in its early days under the care of the Public Libraries Committee, and he was appointed 'Honorary Curator of Fine Arts', It was then housed in the Glynn Vivian Art gallery and later dispersed
