Description

THOMAS, George H. (1816-1870), Major General, "The Rock of Chickamauga." Autograph letter signed ("Geo. H. Thomas"), to Brigadier General A. Baird, Headquarters, Department of the Cumberland, Chattanooga, Tennessee, 11 December 1863. 1½ pages, 8vo, imprinted stationery. Mat-burn at edges, small tape remnant in margins. GENERAL THOMAS, IN THE WAKE OF CHICKAMAUGA. After Thomas's famous stand at Chickamauga (September) and the Union success at Missionary Ridge (November), Thomas remained in Chattanooga before joining the Atlanta campaign. A fine letter in the aftermath of those battles: "Whilst on the Battle field of Chickamauga burying the remains of our brave men left unburied by the enemy I wish you to request the men to collect relics of the Battle to be sent to the Great Western Sanitary Fair to be opened in Cincinnati on the 15th of this month. By so doing they will be making a most valuable contribution to the Sanitary Commission, which has contributed so magnificently in supplying comfort to our brave Volunteers in the field devoting their lives to the defense of our common country."
