CATALOGUE NOTE

Although Thomas Benham lived in London and later in Walberswick in Suffolk, he was deeply inspired by the work of the painters who specialised in depictions of the Cornish fishermen and their families. His work was often similar in subject and execution to the contemporary work of Stanhope Forbes and of George Clausen and the two examples offered here are typical and vibrant.
