Item Overview

Description

Thomas Buford Meteyard (1865-1928) American oil on canvas, Mrs Meteyard in Henry James' Garden at Rye, Sussex, 1956 Redfern Gallery label verso, 22 x 16 ins. E8000-12000 See Illustration. Thomas Meteyard and his wife Isabel moved to Rye in 1911, where they settled into a house abutting that of Henry James. They had been given an introduction to James through his brother William who had taught Meteyard philosophy at Harvard. It was during his time in Rye that Meteyard painted a series of portraits of his wife which relate to the contemporaneous work of the Camden Town Group, inaugorated by Lucien Pissaro in 1911. At this time the artists' work clearly adopts a change in direction towards post-impressionism as can be seen in a related work 'The Peacock Hat'.
