*Theodore Caruelle d'Aligny (1798-1871) view in the forest of fontainebleau. Pen and brown ink over pencil. 329 by 473mm. Provenance: Philippe Albin (not in Lugt). Literature: M.-M. Aubrun, Theodore Caruelle d'Aligny, 1798-1871; Catalogue raisonne de l'Oeuvre peint, dessine, grave, Paris 1988, p.228, cat. D.117, illus. Caruelle d'Aligny was known for the innovative nature of his landscapes. Having studied in Paris with L.-E. Watelet, he went to Rome, where he worked with Corot in 1826/27, and acknowledged the older artist as his master. He returned to France in 1827 and the next year set himself up at Fontainebleau, where his continued study of landscape resulted in bold, free drawings such as this.
