The Meriden Britannia Company (now the International Silver Company) commissioned Theodore Baur to create The Buffalo Hunt in order to commemorate the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876. The work was later exhibited at several other major exhibitions around the country, and the Meridian Company offered it as a regular catalog item between 1876 and 1886. It was also cast in a smaller 6 1/2 inch version, and the buffalo was cast as a 4 1/2 inch silver paperweight. A silver and gold plated version of this sculpture is in the collection of the White House.
