To honour the Queen Mother, Queen Emma of the Netherlands, the city of Amsterdam organised an elaborate feast with all kinds of associated activities, which lasted three days, from the 4th to the 6th of February 1904. The festivities were devised to celebrate 25 years of the Queen's loyalty and service to the Dutch people, first as the wife of the King (1879-1890), then as regent (1890-1898) for her only daughter Wilhelmina, and after that as Queen Mother. For this special occasion a feestgids was issued, containing an introduction describing Queen Emma's contributions, reproductions of drawings by various artists made specially for the occasion, and also the program for the three days. The booklet was entitled: Huldefeest ter herdenking van het 25 jarigverblijf van H.M. de Koningin moeder in Nederland. The drawings by Nieuwenhuis and Dijsselhof are the original designs for some of the illustrations in this guide (pp. 2-3,14 and 15). In addition, the Unicorno collection contains drawings by Witsen and Breitner that were also made for this event (see lots 351-3).
