CATALOGUE NOTE

This rare artist was probably born in Portugal but worked in Holland, where he was a student of Jan Evert Morel (died 1808). Only three other dated still lifes by this artist are recorded. The first, dated 1777, is in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Amsterdam (inv. no. A503); the second, also dated 1777, was sold London, Sotheby's, 9 November 1966, lot 148; the third, dated 1780, was with Wildenstein, New York, 1963.
