Roberts began his career by working in his family's decorating business, although he was also influenced by his father's work as a landscape painter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1859 and was elected to the New Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1870. His works show the great inspiration which he drew from the painting of William Henry Hunt (see lot 138).
