Description

The following seven lots 536-542 are by the Austrian artist Hedi Schick, 1906-1999 Born in Vienna in 1906, Hedi SchÝck studied at the Applied Arts School where she was encouraged by the artist Oskar Kokoschka. She escaped Nazi persecution in Austria, came to Britain in 1936 and began working painting theatre backdrops and scene painting, receiving British Citizenship in 1947. She met Clement and Wilfred Hall who ran the Hill Gallery, an Islington art gallery and became their picture restorer. She exhibited with the Islington Art Circle during the 1950s and 1960s. Much of this work was based on her family's experiences in the Holocaust. She worked as an illustrator, illustrated the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson and was the illustrator for books such as Bush and Billabong: Australian Tales of Long Ago by Peter Paxton, in 1945. also doing further advertising work for theatre and for clothes.
