Description

THE AMERICAN SHIP "SEA LARK." ATTRIBUTED TO DUNCAN MCFARLANE (BRITISH 1818-1865). Depicted inward bound to Liverpool, making ready to receive a pilot. The clipper "Sea Lark" was built in 1852 at Trescott, Maine for Samuel E. Reed of Boston and E. Mott Robinson of New Bedford. She served the trade between Liverpool and various American ports until May 3, 1863, when she was captured and burned off the coast of Brazil by the notorious Confederate raider "Alabama." Watercolor on paper, 16 x 23 1/2 inches, sight.
