Description

This appealing engraving of a floral bouquet is from Livre de Corbeilles et Vases de Fleurs or Book of Baskets and Vases of Flowers. The images are after the original paintings of Louis Tessier, the flower painter to the king. They were engraved by Jean-Jacques Avril, a French artist often referred to as "L'aine". The work was published in Paris by J. F. Chereau in 1770. Dunthorne noted of the work that "Avril's engraving is remarkable for its beauty... resulting in a brilliancy not found in other engravings of flowers." (Dunthorne 299)
