Notes

Executed in 1956.

The Filonov school was renowned for its rigorous teacher-pupil relationship, stemming from the concept that analytical art was closer to a personal disposition than a universal creative method. The process of study lay at the centre of a work's creation and, as Filonov argued in Ideology of Analytical Art, the more conscientiously an artist works on his intellect, the stronger the effect of the finished composition on the spectator. It was the artist's aim to record in minute detail through his materials the inner psychological process within them. Tatiana Glebova was a student in Alexei Savinov's studio from 1924-6, before becoming Pavel Filonov's student in 1926 and joining the Masters of Analytical Art, where she contributed to all their projects until 1932.
