Notes

Tancrède-Synave was a member of the Academie Julian in Paris and studied with Benjamin Constant, Jules Lefèbvre and Gabriel Ferrier, amongst others. He made his name by painting social scenes and portraits and gained popularity quickly. His favorite subjects included scenes of children at play and portraits.

He exhibited many times at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1893 to 1936 and he received several prizes such as the médaille d'honneur in 1894 and the médaille d'or in 1924.

The intensity of the brush, the use of bold colours and the unusual compositions in his paintings recall artists such as Louis Valtat or Henri Lebasque.
