Description

Syd Browne (American, 1907 - 1991), "Maine Seascape," c. 1950, oil on board, signed lower left, measures 10 x 16 inches, overall in its period barn board style frame, 17.50 x 23.50 inches. CONDITION: Good. Syd J. Browne was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 21, 1907. His worked mainly in oil paintings and etchings, including depictions of streets, landscapes, townscapes, marine and harbors, and scenes of Spain. He was the husband of 20th-century artist Sandra James Browne. Browne studied at the Art Students League in New York City; with Eric Pape (1870-1938); and DuMond. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society in New York City; Society of American Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; Southern Printmakers; Salmagundi Club in New York City; Philadelphia Watercolor Club; and the New York Watercolor Club. Browne exhibited at the Paris Exposition, 1937; World's Fair, New York, 1939; and the Art Institute of Chicago, 1939. His work is on display at the Library of Congress.
