Item Overview

Description

This hand-colored botanical engraving is from Robert Sweet's Flora Australasica; or a selection of handsome and curious plants, natives of New Holland and the South Sea Islands. The work was published by James Ridgeway in London between 1827 and 1828.

Flora Australasica... was noted as one of the most attractive Australian botanical works. It was the first to use live plants rather than dried examples or field sketches. When possible, we we will include the descriptive text that describes the plant and its discovery. Most of the plants in the work were native to New South Wales, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania and King George's Sound.
