Notes

Susi Singer was born in Vienna in 1891. From 1905 until 1915 she studied at the Kunstschule für Mädchen und Frauen in Vienna. Singer joined the Wiener Werkstätte in 1917. Prior to the late 1920s there are very few works known by Singer, the reason being that she had never worked in ceramics prior to joining the WW workshop, and it took her two years to become used to the new medium. Singer created many figural series as well as original works from 1921 onward and was, according to the sale results, very successful. Upon her marriage in 1924 she changed her name to Susi Singer-Schinnerl. She left the Wiener Werkstätte in 1925 to open her own ceramics workshop but was forced to leave Austria on account of her religion in 1937. She emigrated to the United States with her husband, where she died in California in 1965.
