Item Overview

Description

SUSANNE WENGER (1915-2009) IWIN Print 50.3 x 58.4 cm. (19¾ x 23 in.) Signed (lower right) Uche Okeke [b.1933] is widely regarded as a most influential modern nigerian artist. His reputation lies in the leading role he played in founding the Art Society, a group of art students at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria [1958-61] that famously advocated a specifically Nigerian modern art at the dawn of political independence. The untitled work is part of an important body of work Okeke produced in the early 1960s at the height of his formal experimentation with Uli art. Like the traditional artists, he relies here on rhythmic eloquence and gestural quality of the quickly drawn line, rather than on techniques of illusionistic or realistic drawing. The few bold lines, ample space, and very limited figural details in this drawing is consistent with several other ink and brush drawings he made of biblical themes.-CO
