Kakejiku, in ink on paper, depicting the four Chinese characters Ko Un Ryu Sui (the clouds in the sky and the stream below) rendered in bold and strong calligraphic strokes, signed with seal Suda Kokuta and dated in black pencil 1989, the hyoso also designed by the artist; with tomobako titled, signed and dated by the artist Suda Kokuta, sen kyu-hyaku hachiju-kyu, nana, niju (Suda Kokuta, 1989, 7, 20) with seal.

Born in Saitama Prefecture, Kokuta started his career as a Western-style painter and obtained many special awards for his figurative paintings at the Kanten exhibitions, but after 1949 he changed direction and moved into the world of abstract paintings. He is well known for his powerful, bold and unrestrained brushstrokes, as is clearly demonstrated here.

A similar calligraphic painting by the artist was sold in these rooms, 11 May 2010, lot 148.

'Ko Un Ryu Sui', the four-character compound depicted on this painting offered here, is a proverb meaning 'serenity of mind of a person who is identified with the clouds in the sky and the stream below.'
