Notes

PROPERTY FROM A SWISS PRIVATE COLLECTION
As the signature and date would suggest this painting has traditonally been attributed to the very young Jan van Huysum ( 1682-1749) at the time when he was working in the studio of his father Justus van Huysum (1659-1723). A drawing of the same composition survives in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, which is signed or inscribed 'Jan van Huysum', which suggests that at the very least Jan van Huysum may have had some hand in the evolution of its design. Another surviving still life from this same period, that now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille, which is signed and dated 1706, would, however, seem to be of higher quality than the present work. The subdued palette and dry facture would moreover be more in keeping with the mature style of Justus van Huysum suggesting that the present work should more correctly be regarded as a studio production, to which the various members of the family each contributed.
