STUART James (1713-1788) and Nicholas REVETT (1720-1804). The Antiquities of Athens. London: Priestley and Weale, 1825-1830. 4 volumes, 2° (440 x 300 mm). Engraved portraits of Stuart and Revett, engraved frontispiece in vol. 4, 191 engraved plates. (Lacking half-titles, browning, offsetting and staining, library stamp on blank margin of plates.) Modern half calf over old boards (corners bumped). Provenance: J.l. Hornblower (ownership inscription) -- Leicester Society of Architects (book-label and stamp to plates).

Second edition, 'A new edition' (RIBA). The first was published in three volumes from 1762 to 1794, with two supplements issued in 1816 and 1830. 'This work was of great importance in spreading the knowledge of Greek architecture, and was the source book for the later Greek revival in England'. Fowler 340. RIBA 3188. (4)
