Item Overview

Description

Series of nearly 150 autograph letters signed ("Leonard"), to Miss Mary Turner: a passionate series of sometimes very long letters, discussing their feelings for one another ("...I'm glad you were happy last Wednesday. I was -- & I was enthralled once more by your power over me, your unexpected power. I don't mean that left-handedly, darling! what I mean is your power to transform fatigue & limpness into active strength, with no reaction afterwards but rest & peace..."), over 300 pages, with envelopes, 8vo, London and elsewhere, 1939-1949

Notes

Mary Turner was the daughter of Strong's friend Tom Turner (1870-1949), of Strawlands, Baildon, Yorkshire. A post office employee, he was a poet, short story writer and book collector, whose substantial library, mostly poetry, is now at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
