Description

American. Tempera or gouache on board. Black woman in green dress and white apron with iron teakettle and stockpot, outdoors, preparing chicken for plucking. Tree with foliage to right with bench and butcher knife. 8" x 7" ss. Painted on a folded gift box, folded flaps behind painting. "In 1971, Stovall decorated the lids of at least four cardboard boxes as a donation to the annual Lynchburg Fine Art Center box lunch . . . The figures on the boxes are reminiscent of the central characters in . . . "Comp'ny Comin" (Weatherford, The Art of Queena Stovall, 1986, p. 96). (Compn'y Comin" {1967} sold by this auction house November 2000).
